Large Bore Rotary Actuator Produces Amazing 10,000 in-lbs of Torque at Only 80 psi

Challenge:

A customer wanted to use a rotary actuator to control the angle of the vanes on a power generating turbine for a company that harnesses solar energy from tropical oceans. They use this energy to generate electricity, produce desalinated water, and grow food, all in the ocean environment. The problem was the customer needed a single rack actuator rated at 10,000 in-lbs of torque at 80 psi.

Solution:

Bimba's engineers took a customer's idea and created a solution for this unique application. Bimba developed an 8" bore rotary actuator that was custom made with a special hollow shaft and end cap to accept an existing coupling in a custom made case to last in a corrosive environment with the exposure to sea air and water. Bimba also added encoders to the unit to provide feedback to blade position.

Power Plant Position Feedback Cylinder Reduces Pollution 10% and Increases Efficiency 15%

Challenge:

A recycling facility uses the energy created from burning solid waste to heat a boiler, which in turn runs a turbine that generates electricity. To control the temperature, they were using two-position actuators that would open a damper all the way, or close it completely. Looking for a way to control the temperature and combustion process more effectively, they turned to Bimba.

Solution:

The facility installed Bimba PFCN cylinders and PCS controls to adjust the dampers in a test installation. Using the PCS controls and PFC cylinder for closed loop operation, the dampers could be opened to intermediate positions. This allowed them to accurately control the temperature, which enabled tighter control of the combustion process.

The test installation was monitored for over a year. In addition to better heat control, the Bimba closed loop pneumatic system reduced pollution by 10% and improved efficiency 15%. Impressed with the products' performance and durability, and pleased with their own process improvements, the facility expanded use to other plants.

Six Cylinder Design = $500 Savings per System

Challenge:

A customer who manufactures machines that assemble PVC strips for the use of cooling towers at nuclear power plants was using over 72 individual cylinders for each machine. The customer wanted to reduce costs without changing the envelope dimensions of their existing design.

Solution:

Bimba's Application Engineers designed six Flat Square cylinders into one product using an elongated rod guide and rear head design. This reduced the quantity of cylinders needed per machine from 72 to 12. Significant cost savings, approximately $500 per system, were attained because the customer was able to eliminate individual flow controls and fittings and valves for each cylinder.
