A: Typically this depends on the availability of compressed air vs. electricity, the forces, speeds required and how much control you need for your application. In general, electric actuators offer more precise control and have a higher initial cost but in the long run may offer a lower total cost of ownership. Pneumatics generally offer greater output force and faster speeds and less expensive initially. Read our whitepaper to learn more about using electric vs. pneumatic.

A: All Bimba actuators are designed to last millions of cycles when applied under normal operating conditions. A number of products are factory lubed with proprietary grease formulations that allow the cylinders to be applied without the need for additional lubrication, this includes Bimba’s Original Line® Cylinders. Other products are lubricated with a light oil and should receive lubrication either continually through the use of an in line lubricator or approximately every 500 hours of operation for maximum life. Bimba’s Original Line® cylinders are non-repairable in design. However, a wide range of other products are offered that are repairable. Repair kits are offered for these repairable products to allow users to replace the common wear components. Please consult our product catalogs for information on the individual lubrications used on each product.
A: Breakaway is the term used to describe the amount of pressure to overcome the normal friction of a cylinder. This can be different for different product lines. Click here to see our technical tips outlining breakaway for each Bimba product line.
